Lightbox & iWeb Article Moved

Due to the surprisingly resilient interest in an ancient post of mine, Lightbox and iWeb, I’ve decided to make that a permanent article in it’s own right on the Articles page.

I think I’m (mostly) done with the presentation overhaul of the “venerable” timofejew.ca. And I have to say (again), that the decision to switch to WordPress as a CMS for the site was an excellent choice. Even if it one day becomes obsolete (or I change my ever fickle tastes), at least the database structure is trivial to decode to port to a new CMS system if needed. Considering that this is the 5th incarnation of timofejew.ca/timofejew.com to date, the possibility is far from remote that I’ll eventually switch to another system in the future. And the content has grown over the years, so this isn’t a trivial concern. More »


Font Rendering (or: Screw Windows)

Holy crap. Font rendering on Windows is worse than I remembered it being…

I asked Nic to have a quick look at timofejew.ca on a Windows PC, now that I’ve tweaked the design a bit, and get his opinion (and to verify that I didn’t do something that caused Internet Explorer to have indigestion). And specifically, I’ve been really pleased with the elegant look of the Baskerville font (which is a standard font on Mac OS X), and I wanted to hear how it looked on Windows. The italics face is gorgeous, and overall, it’s a beautiful serif font. If it were legal, I’d sleep with that font. More »


Didn’t make the connection

It’s true. Everything under the sun has been done before.

I had named this new site cigarettes and coffee because I used a coffee stain and a dirty ashtray for decorations. How’s that for literal thinking? And, well… it does fit my personality.

However, I had completely forgot about the Jim Jarmusch movie, Coffee and Cigarettes. But that’s OK by me—it was a good movie. And it’s totally different: the words are reversed…

I’m really liking WordPress. Quite a bit, in fact. It’s a breeze to add new content, and, best of all, it’s free (as in GPL free). And there’s that really cool iPhone/iPod Touch plug-in for it that more or less makes a “parallel” installation, and uses it’s own Mobile Safari theme on the fly. More »
