Site update: progress report (3)

SlideShowPro Example

SlideShowPro Example

Well, I think I’ve finally sorted out (for now) a photo gallery technique. I’m using SlideShowPro. It’s a pretty decent Flash component (although a bit expensive for what it is, but then again, I’m finding all Flash components available on teh Intertubes surprisingly expensive for what they are). Adding new photos with the Director program is pretty trivial (and it even has an Adobe Lightroom export module—it really couldn’t be simpler to update albums). I did have to mess around a bit with some cropping to get the gallery page looking half-way decent, but that was a minor issue.

I’m still not entirely happy with photo presentation technology available as of now. It’s missing something, but I don’t know what it is just yet. Maybe it’s that whole “here are some photos! splat!” feel about pretty much all photo galleries I’ve seen thus far on the web. Or, perhaps it’s just that photo series are really not a good fit for the Internet? I’m not sure what I really don’t like about photo galleries at the moment. However, once I get over this hump with work, I’m going to have to seriously start experimenting with different methods of displaying photos. There must be a better way. I suppose I’m going to have to roll up my sleeves and figure out once-and-for-all how to program in Flash.

May the gods have mercy on my soul.

For my vast legions of fans viewing this site on the iPhone, not to fear—you’re not left out in the dark[1]. If you follow the “Gallery” menu entry, you’ll end up at my MobileMe photo gallery. It doesn’t quite match what you’ll see here if you were using a “real” computer, but hey… why are you even bothering[2] to look at tiny little version of the photos anyway?

Oh, and for what it’s worth, I have about half of the 2005 posts ported over to the new site. About another 15 or 20 old posts, then you can tell your friends, that oh yes, the new site will be fully operational when they arrive.

  1. As you may or may not know, the iPhone won’t display Flash content. []
  2. Disclaimer: I use an iPhone, and happen to think it’s fun to bother. []
