Photo Course

I decided to take a course at the Toronto Image Works called Develop Your Photography. I think it’s going to be fascinating. I’ve been to the first of six weeks so far, and I’m feeling inspired. The instructor is superb, the small class is very enthusiastic, and the outline has us all developing a series on a single theme by the end of the course.

My only worry is that with the course being just six weeks, I may not be able to produce much of a series. However, it’s not a big concern, as I’m much more interested in the process at the moment, than producing the final assignment. I’m hoping that I will be able to apply the process to a future project with a longer timeline. I haven’t sorted out what my theme will be yet, but I have a few thoughts on the matter:

  • leaning towards an abstract concept rather than a study (i.e. images explaining a word/phrase/idea rather than a collection of images of an object)
  • only use readily available objects/models/locations
  • will not be landscape or cityscape
  • I’m still debating about using digital or film. There’s a couple of variables. If it’s large format (say, 11×14 or 16×20), and I’m going to print B&W, then film is definitely the cheapest option (I can print them myself). If it’s colour, then digital is the preference, but I’ll need to get a medium format printer (like an Epson R2400 or something). If I can get away with 8×10, then it’s digital for sure, regardless of whether it’s B&W or colour – prints are cheap.
